(Neo) Orientalism and Violence in the Post Arab Novel: A Neo-Patriarchal Reading of Leila Aboulela's Fiction

Abstract

This paper intends to examine how the colonial encounter with the British led to the inferiorisation of the Arab woman. The subjugation and marginality of the Arab woman has been reinforced in the Domestic space. The paper will also explicate how patriarchy has mutated itself and Neo-Patriarchy is the new form of dominance in Sudan. Since the family is the smallest unit of the state, the Arab women is robbed of a voice and is considered as the second sex. The paper will chronicle the battered existence of the Arab world and how affluent and elderly women dominate younger women With the intention of maintaining Arab culture and civilization. It also demonstrates the search for a voice in a society there is an evitable otherness. Concepts such as honour killings and sexuality will be discussed with the context of Arab culture and civilization. The basic question is whether Arab men and women have the same standards.
